“Love and Learn”

by Anne Thrope/360° Poetry and Kenneth Bryant/Letters From Yesterday

“Love and Learn”

The mind is a garden
and as its precious caretaker
I watch over it with love
Hold space
and let the rain from above
wash clean every trace
of ill will

But, my mind wanders, it strays.
I often feel lost among the weeds.
My loneliness is palpable, betrays.
I’m afraid, no amount of acid rain
can dissolve away my myriad of sins.

What grows
I try to enjoy
and if I don’t prefer it
I plant something different
Often two seed packets
hold me hostage
and in a fit of passion
I try them both
“but they don’t go together”
some tell me
as if on cue
Who told you?
Maybe I’m the one
to make it work
If not
it’s okay to be wrong
My garden won’t be barren for long
properly nourished
it will flourish

But, I have been wrong so often,
I am fearful of making mistakes.
I have had to dig up and relocate
so many notions I had embraced.
The soil acidity was not quite right,
or lack of nourishing sunlight bright.
I have taken to tearing them out
by their delicate roots, viciously.
I can be such a cruel caregiver.

Perhaps, I will invest
in a seed spreader?
Purchase every seed
packet on the rack, and
empty them all at once.
If I cannot find a single one
among so many, to love,
I believe all hope is lost!

I’ve tried so many seeds
my head spins
yet I know
soon
I’ll find one
I fall in love with
That one I’ll plant
again and again
love it
get to know it
inside and out
learn all it’s foibles

I’ll become such an expert
on that seed
such passion will shine through
and carry me
towards something new
some new facet
of growth perhaps
I’ll be taught things
I never dreamed of

I have a vivid imagination,
if I do find that special one,
I will pour my heart and soul,
open my mind to self control,
forsaking all others, and learn.

My life
will be a lesson
in love.
